Opposition betting is a multi-deck betting strategy. It's especially effective where pit bosses are liable to be watching your betting patterns. To beat multi-deck blackjack games, you must understand what you are up against. I'll be honest with you. These games are tough to beat. Many players fail to comprehend two basic facts of the multi-deck challenge.

Fact 1: You cannot soundly beat multi-deck games with a flat bet or even a small spread, regardless of your system. To get a significant edge in a multi-deck game usually requires a spread of 1 to 8 units or more. The only exception to this rule would be for a table-hopper who plays only when the count is favorable. In essence, this would not be flat-betting but using a spread in which the minimum bet is zero units. You should view table-hopping the same way because it's necessary to spend time watching, counting, and waiting until you can place your bets. Table-hopping is a camouflage technique that makes you appear to be a small-spread or flat-bettor.

Fact 2: Multi-deck games are less vulnerable to traditional count strategies because the shifts in advantage are less volatile. Many players fail to grasp this because they do not understand how card counting works. This is an actual letter I received from a player many years ago:

On my recent trip to Vegas I played exclusively in 4-deck games. I prefer the 4-deck games because the count doesn't jump around so much. When a shoe goes hot, it often stays that way for a long time, so I can continue to bet high for many hands in a row. In single-deck, it seems like I'll get one or two high bets then the count drops, and in no time at all they're shuffling again. In a shoe game, if the count drops real low, I leave the table and find a better game.
